Volunteer State Health Plan Taps Ryan as Chief Operating Officer

Former CoverTN Director to Oversee Cover Tennessee Operations at BlueCross Subsidiary

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Stephani Ryan has been named chief operating officer for Cover Tennessee operations at Volunteer State Health Plan (VSHP). VSHP is a subsidiary of BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, a contractor for Governor Phil Bredesen’s Cover Tennessee programs.

In her role as chief operating officer, Ryan will be accountable for working with VSHP management to define performance criteria and expectations for CoverTN and CoverKids products, as well as overseeing operations for AccessTN. She will also participate in the creation and execution of the strategic plan for the company. Ryan will report directly to Sonya Nelson, president and CEO of VSHP. 

“Stephani’s 20 years of experience in the insurance industry, as well as her direct experience with the CoverTN program, make her an important asset to our continuing support of the state’s efforts to expand affordable health care access to Tennesseans,” Nelson said.

Ryan most recently served as the director of CoverTN. Prior to her service with CoverTN, Ryan was the director of consumer insurance services for the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance. She has also held positions as a sales and marketing representative for Benefit Communications, Inc. and the brokerage director for MassMutual.

A graduate of David Lipscomb University, Ryan earned her bachelor’s degree in finance and economics. She is a long-standing volunteer for Special Olympics.
