Pediatric Workshop to Address Common Health Concerns

Free Event Aimed at Parents and Children

Chattanooga, Tenn. — Chattanooga-area parents and their children are invited to attend a free pediatric workshop at the Brainerd Recreation Center Nov. 15 from 11a.m. to 3 p.m.

The theme for Pediatric Workshop 2008 is “Educating the Community: Helping People be Better Patients for their Doctors” and is co-sponsored by Volunteer State Health Plan (VSHP), local physician Emily Reeves-Douglas and the Brainerd Recreation Center. It focuses on children’s health care issues such as asthma, diabetes and obesity and will provide tools for parents on how to make better choices when treating them.

“An estimated 19 to 30 percent of Tennessee school students are overweight and an additional 25 to 43 percent are at risk for being overweight. Those are alarming statistics,” said Lolita Bryson, community care partner for VSHP. “The 2008 Pediatric Workshop is a way for parents to teach their children how to take charge of their health and hopefully encourage them to lead healthier, more active lifestyles.”

The event will feature local physician-led workshops and health assessment screenings for glucose, asthma, vision and dental.

Children’s activities include disc golf, mini-tennis, face painting, storytelling and “Let’s Get Fit” exercise routines. Door prizes will be given away, including a Nintendo Wii game system. Lunch will be provided.

Pediatric Workshop 2008 is open to the public but space is limited. Call 1-888-397-5175 to make a reservation.
