Health Fair Aims to Help Area Seniors Age Successfully

Seniors in the Chattanooga area looking to move more, eat better and enjoy a more active life are encouraged to attend the Senior Wellness and Health Fair on Saturday, Oct. 18. The event is free and will be held at First Baptist Church in Chattanooga from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Sponsored by Volunteer State Health Plan (VSHP) and the fitness and wellness ministry of First Baptist Church, the festival will offer exhibit booths to help educate seniors about the benefits of leading a healthy and active lifestyle.

In addition to exhibit booths, there will be a healthy cooking demonstration by a registered dietician, an “Ask the Doctor” segment with a family physician, and a discussion led by a family therapist on the importance of relationships.

Free dental, vision, glucose, blood pressure and mammography screenings will be offered. Educational workshops on a range of topics, including family caregiver challenges, the basics of Medicare Part D, healthy living and osteoporosis will be offered as well.

“Most people only think of the young when they think of exercise and good health, but wellness is a lifetime pursuit,” said Jeremy Scruggs, community care partner for VSHP.

“The goal of this fair is to inform seniors of, and link them to, resources available to them in their community and to motivate them to make positive health behavior changes.”

A complimentary boxed lunch will be provided for all participants as well as chances to win door prizes.
